SPAM 2000 Version 3 (Release 2*)

E-mail Print

The latest version of SPAM 2000 release is an improved version of 10 x 10 km grid of crop harvested area, production and yield compare to previous ver2.0. many gaps has been filled in the subnational crop production statistics for more countries in Africa and Central America with significant clean up in the disaggregated subnational boundary files to align with landuse layers and crop production data.

From the cropland perspective, in version 2.0 we used IFPRI’s own hybrid cropland, processed from GLC2000, MODIS 2000 and IFPRI cropland extent, while in ver3.0 we used cropland from Ramankutty et al. (2008).

Feedback and comments received from other CGIAR centers and national collaborators through a two-year validation process, formed part of the quality built into the ver3.0 with multiple model improvements and it can now handle uncertainty in cropland, include new prior estimation and  handle crop yield abnormalities among irrigated, rainfed high-input and rainfed low-input systems.

*Note: Version 3 release 2 contains the same data as version 3 release 1 but corrects the coordinates in the downloadable ascii files. The ascii files for Version 3 release 1 contained incorrect coordinates for the lower left x and y corners resulting in a shift the SPAM results by 1/2 a cell (0.04167dd or approximately 5km at the equator). Specific information on how to correct this shift if you have already downloaded release 1 is available in Known Issues. Additionally, the corrected data, version 3 release 2, are available for download. The release 1 data have been removed from the download site.
