SPAM Spatial Production Allocation Model

What? Using a variety of inputs, SPAM uses a cross-entropy approach to make plausible estimates of crop distribution within disaggregated units.

How? Moving the data from coarser units such as countries and subnational provinces, to finer units such as grid cells, reveals spatial patterns of crop performance, creating a global gridscape at the confluence between geography and agricultural production systems.

Why? Improving spatial understanding of crop production systems allows policymakers and donors to better target agricultural and rural development policies and investments, increasing food security and growth with minimal environmental impacts

SPAM Updates

With the intention of ever refining SPAM's quality, we are re-running the model country by country with new input data when available.  We balance our efforts between refining the SPAM 2000 global dataset of 20 crops, and moving ahead to build SPAM 2005 at 35 crops.

THE PIPELINE:

Kenya 2005 subnational data is ready to be run with an anticipated release date in August, 2010.  We are currently processing the subnational statistics for South Africa and anticipate a SPAM 2000 South Africa data set by mid September.  Next on the list is Zimbabwe.  If you have any subnational statistics to share (at a provincial or municipal level) please drop us a line.
